Be it adults or kids, everyone loves Television. It has a certain affinity which prevents avoiding it. It is inexpensive, convenient and same time appealing. A person can watch television for almost all day and still would not want to move away. The case is quiet similar with kids; even more. It becomes tough to take them away once they get indulged in TV and its programs. However, a kid’s world should not contain any unrest content. But the scenario of modern world is uncivilised, violated in many ways where TV is an extra addition.
Why Children should not watch television
Television is more harmful than its useful, the reasons being the following:
Addiction
Watching TV is a sort of an addiction which does not wear off easily. The content providers do less care about quality, their focus is always popularity. A kid cannot realise how it can affect him/her. Once a child starts liking TV shows, it is hard to pull him away from it. A child can become inactive and lethargic, if he constantly sits in front of the television. They are also known to grow impatient if they watch too much TV. But the world is full of alternatives; you can easily find a way out.
Collateral damage
Every channel is filled with explicit content, be it comedy, sports or drama. Children do not need to know the explicit content at a young age. All they need are good manners and moral values. But what generally happens is children drift away from the edutainment channels and start watching other non-informative ones. Parents should put a parental lock on all such channels. They should not even watch such programs along with their children. To contain this, parents should enrol their children in skill development classes like drawing, dancing, music, karate etc.
Weak eyesight
Watching TV continuously for hours together leaves a child with bad eyesight. Watching TV lying down also affects eyesight. Drying up of eyes, frequent headaches, migraine etc. are some of the symptoms of weak eyesight. Those who develop weak eyesight also have problems while doing physical activities like playing, swimming, running etc. Children also become inactive, if their eyesight becomes weak.
Obesity
Obesity is the starting point of every disease and illness. If a person is obese he is in great trouble. Once fat sets in, it is almost impossible to get it out of one’s body. Children, who become obese once, remain like that for the rest of their lives. It is the root cause of all problems and very few parents or children understand the fact.
Distraction
Television is the biggest distraction ofone’s life. If kids are into television they tend to forget every other interest or task they need to perform. Even while doing their homework, learning a chapter or playing they end up only thinking about the shows they watch.
Violence
Kids try to imitate all the violence and abusive language they watch and hear on TV. Result is, it makes them less empathetic. Kids are small innocent flowers of heaven that cannot differentiate reality and fantasy. They start to believe the TV world as real. Maybe somewhere deep down they are dealing with depression. So the violence is actually violating their existence.
Delayed Cognitive Development
Excessive television watching hampers cognitive development in children, especially during the formative years. Children learn best through active interaction with their surroundings, but television promotes passive consumption. Studies have shown that children who watch too much TV have delayed language and social skills, struggling to engage in meaningful conversations or understand emotional cues from others.
Reduced Family Time
Television consumption often leads to a reduction in meaningful family interaction. When children spend their time glued to the screen, they miss out on valuable bonding moments with their parents and siblings. This can lead to a weakened family structure, where communication and emotional connection are replaced by mindless entertainment.
Sleep Disruption
Watching TV, especially before bedtime, disrupts a child’s sleep cycle. The bright screen and engaging content stimulate the brain, making it harder for children to relax and fall asleep. Lack of sleep can lead to irritability, decreased focus, and poor performance in school. Additionally, sleep deprivation can have long-term negative effects on mental and physical health.
Poor Academic Performance
Children who spend excessive time watching television often face academic challenges. The time spent in front of the screen reduces the time they can dedicate to their studies, homework, and reading. Over time, this leads to a decline in their overall academic performance, with lower grades and a lack of motivation to engage in learning activities.
Conclusion
Television has the biggest disadvantage on children. They completely lose their focus. Instead of forcing, parents should motivate their children to indulge in activities which will help improving their mind-sets. Parents have to help the kids to adjust the stress. Study his character and try to go through his in-sights. Act like a friend not a tutor. Help him to be happy and relaxed.
